Meet Kelly and Tara, Our Founders

Hushabye Nursery was created by two caring nurses who saw a need for a sustainable model to assist infants recovering from drug addiction. The transformative success stories generated by this organization begin with their tireless efforts.

Tara and Kelly

Kelly Woody

Kelly was born and raised in Denver, Co. She moved to Arizona in 1984 to attend college. Kelly graduated from nursing school in 1988. She began her career in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Her love for these critically ill babies grew to a passion. Kelly went back to school to become a Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and graduated from Grand Canyon University in 1992. She continued her career at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and later at Banner/Cardon’s Children’s Medical Center. Due to the recent opioid epidemic, NICU’s have taken on the care of more and more infants withdrawing from opiates. She developed a special love and compassion in caring for these infants in the NICU setting but quickly determined that the over-stimulating environment of the NICU was not the place for these babies. As Co-Founder of Hushabye Nursery, Kelly is dedicated to giving these very special babies the best care possible at Hushabye Nursery through research, dedication, and education of the neonatal community.

Tara Sundem

Tara was born in Mason City, Iowa and raised in Hartford, South Dakota. She studied Nursing at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota where she received her Bachelor of Science in 1993. Following graduation, Tara moved to Mesa, Arizona. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 7 years at Banner Desert Medical Center in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In 2002, Tara graduated from Arizona State University with a Master of Science and then obtained her Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Certification. Tara has continued to work in the neonatal field as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. The neonatal abstinence syndrome population has now become the main focus for Tara. She is driven to improve the care that is provided to these fragile babies and to their families.
